Course overview

The continued increase in the use of telemetry and other cardiac monitoring devices has put a new emphasis on the importance of nurses and cardiac monitoring technicians to quickly and accurately interpret cardiac rhythms. Many cardiac arrhythmias are life-threatening and must be treated immediately if the patient is to be saved or put out of danger. However, since no two ECG's or cardiac rhythms are identical, a systematic approach must be used to read and interpret the various cardiac rhythms. When students merely memorized the appearance and shapes of a specific rhythm they see in a book, they are often unable to interpret that rhythm when it appears in a real-life situation because it looks totally different from what they have seen in their textbook. In an attempt to bridge this gap between classroom learning and the real world, this book presents a systematic approach with a specific series of steps to be taken with each rhythm strip and a list of features to look for when interpreting a specific cardiac arrhythmia.
