Course overview

Tight blood glucose control can reduce complications in type 1 diabetes by 50% to 76% as demonstrated by the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial. This 10-year landmark study also showed that preventing long-term complications is not without challenge, as the risk for hypoglycemia is increased. The good news is that with proper education, hypoglycemia doesn't have to be a risk or threat to the management of tightly controlled type 1 diabetes. The key is understanding hypoglycemia and its prevention and treatment. An informed person with type 1 diabetes who knows the action of food, insulin and exercise on BG levels can minimize the risk of hypoglycemia and can avoid ever having to experience it. This module will teach you what you need to know to help your patients avoid hypoglycemia: what is tight blood glucose control; how the body responds to hypoglycemia; and how to recognize, treat and prevent hypoglycemia with medication, diet and activity.
