Course overview

Losing weight is difficult; keeping it off is even harder. However, losing as little as 10% of one's body weight may mitigate the litany of diseases and health risks associated with excess weight. These include coronary heart disease; Type 2 diabetes and its precursor, insulin resistance; hypertension; stroke; osteoarthritis; sleep apnea; liver and gallbladder diseases; infertility; and increased risk for cancer of the colon, breast, kidney, and endometrium. For years, healthcare providers and consumers have debated which percentages of protein, carbohydrates and fat make the most effective diet. Several new evidence-based studies help to clarify some of the issues surrounding the selection of a diet for weight loss. Many people choose to begin weight management with a diet, by increasing physical activity or both. Whatever the choice, weight management is a lifetime, goal-driven commitment.
