Course overview
Emotional regulation is the basis of connection, safety, relationships, and a childs successful engagement in their daily occupations of school, play, activities, and social and family connections. This class will dive into the neurobiology of emotional regulation. We will discuss the neurobiology of the limbic system, including the thalamus, insula, and right frontal cortex as these systems work together to support emotional regulation. We will learn about the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems as well as Polyvagal Theory and its connection to these systems. We include discussion on the somatosensory system because of its close connection to supporting regulation. Treatment strategies to support both regulation and co-regulation will be provided to allow therapists to confidently integrate the information learned. It does not matter what our specialty is as a therapist, if we cannot build therapeutic rapport with our pediatric client, the level of our success with them will be limited. Understanding the root of emotional regulation and how to support it will elevate your treatment to the next level. This course has been modified from the original 14-hour Pediatric Brain Course taught for the past 15 years. It can be viewed individually and also works well as a series with Parts 1 and 3, as well as in conjunction with the Primitive Reflex Integration Course. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and question/answers. (Intermediate Level)
