Course overview

Trauma affects all areas and contexts outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, Fourth Edition. Individuals who have experienced trauma may face challenges in social participation, daily activities, and beyond. Trauma influences not only the person but also their interactions within all domains ¿This course will introduce OTs, OTAs and students to trauma and provide essential knowledge needed to recognize and understand trauma within their practice. This course emphasizes the importance of trauma awareness in occupational therapy without focusing on treatment interventions. Instead, it equips practitioners with the knowledge to observe and understand how trauma manifests and affects their clients' occupational engagement. This understanding is crucial for creating a supportive and informed therapeutic environment, ultimately enhancing the overall effectiveness of occupational therapy practice. The second course in this series will focus on trauma-informed care including assessment and treatment. Learning Objectives: Define multiple types of trauma.
