Course overview

This workshop is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support older adults transitioning from independent living to long-term care settings. This transition can be logistically complex and emotionally challenging, impacting not only the older adults but also their families, caregivers, and health care team. This workshop will describe common approaches to capacity assessment, including core considerations for evaluating capacity for independent living and related domain-specific capacities. Katherine King, PsyD will discuss challenging interpersonal dynamics during this transition and provide strategies to improve effective communication. We will explore how to work best with people experiencing caregiver strain, and strategies to help individuals with dementia who may have low insight about the need to move. Evaluate the mental health impacts of moving to long-term care and provide potential interventions to enhance well-being at this crucial time.
