Relationship-Based Assessment of Young Children and their Families: Observation as the cornerstone

Course overview

Beyond ticking boxes in screenings and tools, this session will develop a deeper understanding of why observation is the cornerstone of all assessments of young children. This session will expand participants' observational skills with specific attention to social-emotional functioning. Much of the content is specific to young children and their caregivers but could be adjusted to other stages of development. Participants will hypothesize and explore the functioning of the young child, in the context of early relationships (attachments). Additionally, discussions will include culturally- sensitive and trauma-sensitive perspectives. These explorations and expansions will include a reflective practice model of understanding the unique social-emotional needs of young children. Participants will view as many observations as possible with opportunity toward practice.
