Course overview
Module 1: What is Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs)? - Part 1 This module is broken into 2 parts. This module describes the syndrome of REDs, including the underpinning science. To facilitate comprehension of REDs, the pathophysiology is reviewed. Module 1: What is Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs)? - Part 2 The conceptual models of REDs are introduced and we go through how they can be used to educate the athlete, coach, and the entourage about REDs. Finally, the physiological model is introduced to facilitate understanding of the complex body system interactions in REDs. Module 2: Diagnosing REDs: Practical Guidelines As there is no single diagnostic test to identify an athlete with REDs, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has developed a clinical assessment tool (IOC REDs CAT2) to assist clinicians with diagnosis of this multi-system syndrome. While a sports medicine physician is primarily responsible for diagnosing REDs, physiotherapists should be aware of the diagnostic process and principles. Clinical cases to demonstrate the IOC REDs CAT 2 (clinical assessment tool) are included to demonstrate the functionality of the IOC REDs CAT2. Module 3: Prevention Strategies for REDs In this module, participants will acquire valuable insights as to how to prevent REDs in their populations. While the focus is on primary prevention, secondary and tertiary prevention are also included. Important body composition measurement clinical guidelines to reduce the risk of REDs are introduced and discussed. Module 4: REDs Treatment and Research Guidelines In this module, participants will learn about the various treatment principles and approaches for REDs as well as specific recommendations for key affected body systems. Finally, research principles to guide REDs researchers, and physiotherapists who are reading the scientific literature are reviewed.
