Course overview
This Practical will cover the surface anatomy and landmarks of the superficial calf muscles as well as orient the attendees to the relevant deep calf muscles and their tendons. Relevant injury presentation and past history elements will be discussed briefly before commencing a routine clinical calf assessment consisting of observations and graded dynamic loading tests utilising the other leg as comparison. Insights into contribution of the long toe flexors will be examined briefly and discussed. This will be followed with approaches to isolate the gastrocnemius or soleus to better ascertain its function with different options provided depending on available equipment. The session will be rounded out with brief clearing tests to the most relevant structures, ending with a summary discussion around common presentations and other possibilities.
