Canine Dentistry and Extractions with Wet Lab This program consists of 4 hours of lecture presentations followed by 4 hours of wet lab using canine cadavers that will focus on basic oral therapeutics including in-depth instruction with extraction techniques. The lecture presentation will begin with normal anatomy of the canine adult and pediatric patient, normal radiographic positioning of the canine patient, review of principles and positioning of standard imaging including digital radiographic and cone beam computed tomography, general and individual patient care with respect to the anesthetic process, fundamental anesthetic protocols and patient care for the canine dental patient, applications of local anesthesia and techniques appropriate for the canine patient, as well as standard oral surgical flap and extraction techniques. Patient aftercare and follow up recommendations will also be discussed as well as appropriate post operative instructions. Lecture will also include basic necessities of the dental practice including equipment needs, logistic and regulatory requirements in regard to radiation safety, hand and power instrumentation specific to canine oral surgery suture materials as well as appropriate use and maintenance of the above noted equipment. The wet lab segment of this day will include the application of the aforementioned lecture topics to be applied to canine cadavers. Participants will practice local nerve block applications, general oral flap techniques, closure of tissues, use of high-speed instrumentation as well as hand instrumentation to complete general therapeutics and extractions on cadaver samples. The learning objectives of this course should provide the participants with a better understanding of the dental operatory, equipment used, diagnostic procedures and the entire anesthetic dental process for a canine patient. The participants should also expect to have individual instruction during the wet lab portion to assist with improving all aspect of the dental equipment handling and use as well as oral tissue handling to improve their general knowledge and skill set with regards to canine dentistry and basic extraction techniques.
