Course overview

The PORi Breast Cancer Rehabilitation course is designed to equip participants with the clinical skill sets necessary to develop a comprehensive management system for delivering specialized oncology rehabilitation to breast cancer patients across all phases of their treatment journey, extending into post treatment survivorship. Rooted in the PORi Body Systems Approach, the course integrates an understanding of anatomy, physiology, clinical disease processes, and medical treatment pathways associated with breast cancer into a meticulously structured rehabilitation management system. PORi's rehabilitation management system provides clinical protocols and pathways of care tailored to optimize resolution of impairments, to address sequalae of treatments, and to mitigate progression of sequalae into secondary disease processes. The course addresses the impact of breast cancer and breast cancer treatment on multiple body systems, including the epidermal, dermal, myofascial, skeletal, lymphatic, vascular, neural, aerodigestive, uro-genital, and cardiopulmonary systems, and empowers participants to consider these systems as they apply evidence-based techniques, including myofascial trigger point release, joint mobilization, neural mobilization, lymphatic manual drainage, pain management, oncology-specific exercise prescription, and functional restoration, to address the clinically diverse needs of this patient population. The PORi curriculum also features oncology patient-based lab sessions, facilitating an immersive approach that enhances implementation of oncology-specific evaluation and treatment plans and the formulation of realistic, goal-based outcomes for breast cancer patients undergoing breast cancer-related surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and adjuvant hormonal therapies. Ethical frameworks and interdisciplinary collaboration are also themes throughout the course, providing participants with a knowledge base for the psychosocial and ethical dimensions of cancer care and the importance of collaboration with other healthcare professionals. Additionally, participants receive comprehensive training in self-care and resilience strategies to mitigate the risk of burnout while navigating the complexities of caring Place X, if applicable X X X for oncology patients amidst the challenges inherent in oncology practice.
