Breast cancer remains a significant public health concern, and rehabilitation plays a crucial role in optimizing outcomes for affected individuals. The PORi oncology rehabilitation course aims to equip Physical Therapists (PTs) with specialized knowledge and skills necessary to deliver high-quality rehabilitative care to patients with breast cancer. The curriculum adopts a comprehensive approach by integrating an understanding of the anatomy, physiology, clinical disease processes, and medical treatment pathways associated with breast cancer into a meticulously structured rehabilitation management system. This management system empowers PTs to apply evidence-based techniques, including myofascial trigger point release, joint mobilization, neural mobilization, lymphatic manual drainage, pain management, oncology-specific exercise prescription, and functional restoration to form a robust framework that addresses the clinically diverse needs of patients undergoing breast cancer-related surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and adjuvant hormonal therapies. A key component of PORi is offering hands- on lab experiences and oncology patient-centered approaches, thereby emphasizing the translation of theoretical and clinical knowledge into pathways of clinical decision making and practical skill sets that are applicable to PT practice. PTs learn to navigate the complexities of breast cancer treatment, formulate comprehensive evaluations, and develop well-structured treatment plans aligned with the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) framework and chronic disease models of care. PTs are trained to engage in compassionate clinical decision-making by considering the psychosocial and ethical dimensions of cancer care and the importance of collaboration with other healthcare professionals. In addition, PTs receive comprehensive training in self-care and resilience strategies to mitigate the risk of burnout while navigating the complexities of caring for oncology patients, inspiring ongoing dedication to providing high-quality care amidst the challenges inherent in oncology practice. In summary, by addressing physical impairments, functional limitations, and the psychosocial and ethical needs of patients with breast cancer throughout the treatment journey, PTs equipped with PORi training can significantly enhance the quality of life for cancer patients, promoting optimal functional outcomes across all phases of care in all oncology rehabilitation settings.
