Course overview

At the end of this activity, learners will be able to: 1. Explain the underlying mechanisms, causes, and progression of chronic kidney disease, including the role of diabetes, hypertension, and other contributing factors. 2. Recognize the stages of CKD based on GFR and associated symptoms, from asymptomatic phases to advanced renal failure symptoms. 3. Evaluate the role of diagnostic tests, including GFR measurements, urinalysis, and imaging, to confirm CKD diagnosis, assess disease progression, and detect complications. 4. Apply appropriate pharmacotherapy, including ACE inhibitors, ARBs, other agents, and dietary and lifestyle modifications to manage CKD progression and its complications. 5. Identify and treat common complications such as anemia, hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, renal bone disease, and cardiovascular risks. 6. Plan for timely intervention with dialysis or kidney transplantation, understand the options and criteria for different RRT modalities and recognize when conservative management is appropriate. 7. Establish a routine for ongoing assessment of kidney function, treatment effectiveness, and potential referral to a nephrologist for advanced management. 8. Teach patients how to manage medications during acute illnesses (e.g., vomiting, fever) to prevent further renal deterioration.
