Substance use disorders (SUD) are chronic conditions that require treatment tailored for the client and stage of their illness. There are different stages of recovery from SUD, with abstinence being a goal for some. Supporting clients in recovery and preparing them for abstinence is an important part of treating SUD. A thoughtfully designed recovery plan can be instrumental in achieving and maintaining abstinence.
