Understanding and Treating Hypermobility

Course overview

This course aims to clarify the complexities of Joint Hypermobility, distinguishing it from related conditions such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD). Participants will develop an understanding of the various factors influencing joint mobility, the pathophysiology of Joint Hypermobility (JH), and its prevalence among specific population groups, particularly professional dancers and athletes. Students will learn to utilize assessment tools for JH and Generalized Joint Hypermobility GJH, including the Beighton Score. The course will explore several hypermobility disorders and syndromes, such as Ehlers Danlos syndromes, Marfan syndrome, and Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Additionally, it will examine the gene mutations that lead to Heritable Disorders of Connective Tissue (HDCT). Finally, the course will thoroughly review the clinical presentation of Symptomatic Joint Hypermobility (SJH), covering musculoskeletal effects, types of pain, extra musculoskeletal manifestations, and associated comorbidities. This comprehensive approach will equip participants with the knowledge to determine when further investigation is necessary.
