Course overview
Scientists and health professionals have associated sedentary living with reduced longevity and impaired health for many centuries. Despite the long-standing recognition of this connection, obesity remains at epidemic levels, the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes has never been higher, and young children are developing so-called ?diseases of aging? in escalating numbers. In a 2010 report, the Surgeon General called for a national effort to reverse these growing trends of obesity, obesity-related diseases, and premature death. One of the avenues listed by which this could be accomplished was an increase in physical activity. Unfortunately, statistics indicate that only 35% of adults participate in regular physical activity, and 33% engage in no physical activity at all. Walking is considered the top choice of aerobic activity for most individuals because it allows flexibility in the choice of location, scheduling, clothing, etc. Walking also boasts a high success rate compared to other aerobic activities. This course is designed to help clinicians understand the current recommendations for designing and implementing a safe and effective walking program at any age. Clinically relevant topics in this course include: ?A description of aerobic and resistance exercise ?The mechanics of walking ?The energy gap and obesity ?Using a pedometer to track daily steps ?Setting realistic but effective walking goals ?Guidelines for a pre-walking health evaluation ?The exercise stress test ?Selecting proper walking shoes ?The use of orthotics ?How to select a pedometer ?Tools to increase compliance ?How to Stretch ?Special walking concerns for pregnant women and older individuals This course also describes the most common barriers to exercise, and provides suggestions for overcoming these barriers. Finally, a detailed description is provided of the physical and mental health benefits of walking.
