Course overview

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), leading to heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death in the developed world. In this workshop, we will look at CVD from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine and also Functional medicine, the modern holistic approach that combines physiology, lab testing, and nutritional medicine. We will first detail the physiology and etiology of cardiovascular disease according to modern biomedicine, and how to use lab values to determine the degree and progression of disease. Next, we will address the effects of diet and lifestyle on heart health. Commonly used pharmaceutical interventions including statins will be reviewed, as well as the use of alternative therapies using nutritional medicines. We will then go into a detailed discussion of the TCM understanding of Thoracic Bi Syndrome (Chest Pain), which includes angina and congestive heart failure, examining in depth various Chinese herbal formulas for its treatment. Herbal formulas include available herbal products as well as Chinese hospital formulas for various stages of heart disease, as we will also teach useful acupuncture protocols.
