Course overview

Course Description: This course is based on 3 separate videos from the National Institute of Mental Health that were part of a lecture series on Borderline Personality Disorder. The videos present an introduction to current research into borderline personality disorder as well as perspectives from both the client and clinician. The first video is quite short, but introduces the main points of the lecture series. The second video features Amanda Wang, who is the lead organizer of RethinkBPD. RethinkBPD is a peer led advocacy and support group for Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Her video includes the goals and objectives of the organization as well her own personal experience coping with the disease. The third video is longer and features Dr. Marsha Linehan who is a researcher and clinician working with Borderline Personality Disorder. In her video describes in detail the process of dialectical behavioral therapy and the results she has obtained through the use of this method. This is a particularly useful video as it presents the clinicians perspective on treatment with all of the ups and downs that are associated with long term treatment of a personality disorder. It is a lot like being able to listen to a detailed case study from an expert in the field. You can experience the learning benefits of attending the National Institute of Mental Health conference in Bethesda, Maryland with none of the associated costs of attending a conference live. Social workers, psychologists, mental health counselors, and marriage and family therapists can benefit from this course on Borderline Personality Disorder. This course may also be helpful for nurses, dieticians and nutritionists who work with psychiatric patients. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their clinical skills with personality disorders.
