Course overview

The incidence and prevalence of chronic kidney disease are increasing at an alarming rate worldwide and represent a growing public health problem. About 26 million people in the United States live with CKD, with millions more at risk. The high-risk population includes those with diabetes, hypertension, a family history of kidney failure and advanced age. African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians and Pacific Islanders are at higher risk than the general population. Early detection can help deter progression of kidney disease to kidney failure. A proactive approach may not only improve patient outcomes and quality of life but also help contain the high costs associated with treating CKD and end-stage renal disease.
