Per the CDC's 2022 report, suicide deaths increased by four percent in the year 2021; in their 2020 report, rates of suicidal ideation and self-directed violence (SDV) have increased substantially as well. While Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, the basic principles of DBT are focused on the safety of clients and the management of intense emotions that lead to self-directed violence and death by suicide.
