Course overview
OSTEONECROSIS REFERS TO THE ISCHEMIC DEATH OF ELEMENTS OF A BONE CAUSED BY COMPROMISED VASCULAR INTEGRITY, SUCH AS LOSS OF BLOOD SUPPLY TO A REGION OF BONE. THIS CONDITION IS A COMMON PATHOLOGY WITH DIVERSE ETIOLOGIES AND CAN AFFECT NEARLY ANY BONE IN THE BODY. THE MOST COMMON ETIOLOGIES ARE CHRONIC CORTICOSTEROID USE, ALCOHOLISM, TRAUMA, AND IDIOPATHIC FACTORS.TIMELY AND ACCURATE IDENTIFICATION OF OSTEONECROSIS CHANGES THROUGH IMAGING IS CRUCIAL TO PREVENT IRREVERSIBLE JOINT DAMAGE. MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING IS THE MOST SENSITIVE IMAGING MODALITY AS IT CAN DEMONSTRATE EARLY OSSEOUS CHANGES THAT MAY BE PRESENT BEFORE PLAIN RADIOGRAPHIC CHANGES ARE VISIBLE. INTEGRATED MODELS INCORPORATING CLINICAL AND IMAGING FINDINGS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED TO AID HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS IN UNDERSTANDING, DIAGNOSING, AND STRATIFYING THE RISK OF POTENTIAL SUBCHONDRAL COLLAPSE AND THE BENEFITS OF PROMPT AND APPROPRIATE TREATMENT TO IMPROVE PATIENT OUTCOMES IN THIS IMPORTANT, POTENTIALLY DEBILITATING, YET PREVALENT CONDITION. THIS ACTIVITY ENHANCES CLINICIANS' UNDERSTANDING AND PROFICIENCY IN DIAGNOSING AND MANAGING OSTEONECROSIS THROUGH ADVANCED IMAGING TECHNIQUES.
