Course overview

BRACHYMETATARSIA IS CHARACTERIZED BY THE ABNORMAL SHORTENING OF ONE OR MORE METATARSAL BONES IN THE FOOT, MOST COMMONLY THE FOURTH, LEADING TO AN IMBALANCE IN TOE LENGTH. THIS CONDITION CAN BE CONGENITAL OR ACQUIRED, OFTEN PRESENTING PRIMARILY AS A COSMETIC CONCERN. BRACHYMETATARSIA DISRUPTS THE NORMAL ANATOMY AND BIOMECHANICS OF THE FOOT, LEADING TO FUNCTIONAL ISSUES SUCH AS PAIN, ALTERED GAIT MECHANICS, DIFFICULTIES WITH SHOE FITTING, AND AESTHETIC CONCERNS. THIS CONDITION IS TYPICALLY CAUSED BY PREMATURE EPIPHYSEAL PLATE CLOSURE AND CAN INVOLVE ONE OR MULTIPLE METATARSALS. DIAGNOSIS IS CLINICAL AND SUPPORTED BY IMAGING TECHNIQUES SUCH AS PLAIN RADIOGRAPHY, COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY, OR MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING. TREATMENT TYPICALLY INVOLVES SURGICAL INTERVENTION TO LENGTHEN THE AFFECTED METATARSAL(S), WITH OPTIONS INCLUDING GRADUAL DISTRACTION OSTEOGENESIS OR ONE-STAGE PROCEDURES. THESE APPROACHES ARE TAILORED TO THE PATIENT'S NEEDS AND THE SEVERITY OF THEIR SYMPTOMS, AIMING TO RESTORE NORMAL FOOT ANATOMY AND FUNCTION.THIS ACTIVITY PROVIDES CLINICIANS WITH A COMPREHENSIVE UNDERSTANDING OF BRACHYMETATARSIA, COVERING ITS ETIOLOGY, DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA, AND TREATMENT OPTIONS. THIS ACTIVITY ALSO EXPLORES VARIOUS SURGICAL TECHNIQUES FOR METATARSAL LENGTHENING, INCLUDING GRADUAL DISTRACTION OSTEOGENESIS AND ONE-STAGE LENGTHENING PROCEDURES. THIS ACTIVITY ALSO ENABLES CLINICIANS TO ASSESS PATIENT SUITABILITY FOR SURGERY, PLAN APPROPRIATE INTERVENTIONS, AND MANAGE POSTOPERATIVE CARE TO OPTIMIZE OUTCOMES. IN ADDITION, THIS ACTIVITY HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION AMONG HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS FOR PATIENT-CENTERED CARE, EMPHASIZING PREOPERATIVE COUNSELING AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE TREATMENT OUTCOMES AND PATIENT SATISFACTION.
