Pediatric Left Heart Abnormalities

Course overview

Many abnormalities of the left side of the heart can occur in pediatric patients. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a serious cardiac defect that is not uncommon but has serious consequences if left unaddressed. The risk of sudden cardiac death can change as the child ages and participates in different activities. Clinicians must actively reassess the child's risk and involve parents/guardians in the management process. This learning activity includes two pediatric case studies that help to illuminate congenital malformation of the left heart and progressive left heart changes. By recognizing key anatomy and physiology aspects present in these populations, learners should develop a sense of why and when further testing and treatment are indicated.
