Course overview

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria have become endemic in hospitals and long-term care facilities and are becoming increasingly common in non-healthcare settings as well. This poses a considerable threat to emergency responders. Recent studies have found MRSA bacteria on many surfaces in fire stations and ambulances. This course provides an overview of MRSA and discusses key topics of particular concern to emergency responders. Through this course, providers will gain a better understanding of the risks of MRSA, how it is transmitted, how to identify infection, how MRSA patients are managed, and how transmission can be prevented. Additionally, the importance of cleaning and disinfection and post-exposure procedures will be discussed.
