American women experience menopause between ages 40 and 58, with an average age of 51.The average woman in North America turning 50 today can expect to live about 32 more years, meaning that she will spend nearly 40% of her life in postmenopause. The hormonal changes, menstrual irregularity and worries about aging and mortality may make women feel out of control. The perimenopausal years present an ideal opportunity for healthcare professionals as a team to educate patients about beneficial lifestyle changes and health maintenance activities. Often women may not be getting the information they need about treatments that can help them manage their perimenopausal years. This course describes the normal changes that occur to a woman¿s reproductive system as she ages and ways to manage unpleasant symptoms.
