Course overview

Motivational Interviewing is one of the most studied and effective modalities for helping clients resolve ambivalence and achieve the changes they would like to see in their lives around substance use. A transdisciplinary skill, motivational interviewing (MI) can increase the effectiveness of anyone in a direct-contact role with others, including healthcare professionals, business managers, and psychotherapists. Attendees will learn the core philosophies of MI, with strategies to both engage with new patients and evoke intrinsic motivation for behavior change. Specific interventions will be discussed related to enhancing client motivation for change related to using and misusing substances. In this presentation, Dr. Aaron Weiner will incorporate exercises and activities to apply new concepts with the presenter, and will also prepare attendees to continue to practice and improve their MI techniques on their own in the future.
