Course overview

Educational Objectives: After completing this activity, learners will be able to: 1. Understand the principles of blood transfusion, including indications, compatibility, and the safe handling of various blood components such as red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and cryoprecipitate. 2. Develop proficiency in pre-transfusion procedures, including patient identification, sample collection, blood pack verification, and using vascular access devices, filters, and compatible solutions for safe transfusion administration. 3. Recognize and manage transfusion reactions, such as bacterial contamination, allergic reactions, TRALI, fluid overload, and ABO incompatibility, with appropriate interventions and documentation of adverse events. 4. Apply critical decision-making skills during massive transfusion protocols and emergencies, ensuring timely intervention, patient monitoring, and effective communication with the healthcare team. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of post-transfusion care, including patient monitoring for delayed reactions, transfusion in alternative care settings, preventing errors, and patient education on recognizing symptoms and seeking timely medical attention.
