Upon successful completion of this continuing education course, you will be prepared to provide effective and respectful care for patients belonging to different populations, including those identifying as LGBTQ+. Specific learning objectives to address potential learning gaps include:
- Discuss elements of culturally competent care among different populations.
- Describe terminology that is inclusive and respectful of the LGBTQ+ community.
- Summarize health disparities, health risk factors, and clinical implications specific to members of the LGBTQ+ community.
- Identify best practices regarding collecting and protecting patient information for LGBTQ+ patients.
- Discuss elements of culturally competent care for LGBTQ+ patients, including physical space, informational materials, patient communication, and staff training.
- Examine the intersection of oppression, discrimination, and implicit biases in order to provide nondiscriminatory care.
Course overview
Required CEU for Oregon. 2-contact-hour course on cultural competency and implicit (unconscious) bias. Examines how to provide effective and respectful care for patients belonging to a variety of different populations, including LGBTQ cultural competence training for those identifying as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning/queer). Discusses reducing discrimination and/or stigmatization, culturally competent care, best practices for patient information, health risk factors, and clinical implications.
