Course overview
More than half of all nursing home residents, or over 2 million long term residents, have Alzheimer's disease or other conditions causing dementia. Approximately 1.2 million professional caregivers provide this long-term and costly care. The available literature suggests that many professional caregiving issues are similar to those faced by family caregivers, including physical exhaustion, emotional depletion, and grief at the loss of their patients. Additionally, professional caregivers encounter unique challenges such as work overload, increased demands for efficiency within managed healthcare environments, job burnout, and staff turnover. This course examines the stressors inherent in working with Alzheimer's patients and explores methods of self-care for these professionals.

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define anticipatory mourning for caregivers in the Alzheimer’s context and list at least two conditions that can influence the intensity of the mourning experience.
- Articulate the three phases of burnout in Alzheimer’s caregivers and identify three measures to assess self-care needs among healthcare professionals.
- Apply three self-care strategies to reduce personal and professional stress, including acknowledging loss in the workplace.
