Course overview

This hands-on, practical application course is designed to empower therapists with the skills and confidence to incorporate low-tech assistive technology (AT) into their practice, particularly for underserved and rural populations where resources are limited. Participants will assess free assistive technology lending libraries, DIY solutions, and low-cost AT options that can be applied across the lifespan and in various settings. Using data from The University of Montana's "Disability in America" map series, the course highlights the strong connection between poverty and disability with a focus on specific regions. These insights underscore the critical need for budget-friendly AT interventions to improve out-comes for individuals facing these compounded challenges. Through hands-on demonstrations, attendees will expand their knowledge of available low-tech AT resources, discover innovative and affordable solutions, and learn how to creatively integrate these tools into daily rehabilitation practices. By the end of this course, learners will leave equipped with actionable strategies to address the unique needs of diverse client populations and improve access to life-changing assistive technology.
