Overview of Basic Wound Cleansing and Debridement

Course overview

Wound cleansing is one of the most basic and important components of an effective wound management care plan. However this step involves more than just cleaning the wound. Wound cleansing is a process that involves cleaning the wound bed and skin surrounding the wound debridement of non-vitalised tissue and the selective and mindful use of topical antimicrobial agents to manage bacterial contamination and colonisation. An effective wound cleansing protocol also requires a holistic patient management approach to ensure the wound has the best chance of healing. This course introduces basic wound cleansing principles and reviews important wound care concepts such as wound infection formation of biofilms and holistic patient assessment. It discusses advanced wound care treatment techniques such as sharp debridement which require hands-on training mentorship and / or certification to safely perform. When practising wound care rehabilitation professionals must be aware of their scope of practice and practice rights in a given location before performing advanced wound care techniques.
