Phantom limb pain is a painful sensation felt in a body part that has been amputated. It affects the majority of individuals with amputations to varying degrees and is distinct from non-painful phantom sensations and residual limb pain. Despite its prevalence there is a lack of reliable data on the causes of phantom limb pain and effective treatment strategies. This course introduces the general features of phantom limb pain explores risk factors and examines previous and current theories on its underlying mechanisms. This course aims to describe phantom limb pain and provide an overview of its potential causes.
