Lesson Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to achieve the following objectives:
1. Learners will be able to define human trafficking by identifying key elements such as exploitation, fraud, and coercion.
2. Learners will be able to describe the main provisions of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) and its impact on combating human trafficking.
3. Learners will be able to explain the Action-Means-Purpose (AMP) model by breaking down the concepts of Action, Means, and Purpose in human trafficking cases.
4. Learners will be able to differentiate between sex trafficking and labor trafficking, identifying key characteristics and risk factors.
5. Learners will be able to recognize the risk factors that increase vulnerability to human trafficking, including economic, psychological, and social factors.
6. Learners will be able to identify health indicators associated with human trafficking victims.
7. Learners will be able to classify traffickers by their operational methods and recruitment techniques.
8. Learners will be able to demonstrate appropriate intervention techniques in suspected human trafficking cases within healthcare settings.
9. Learners will be able to comply with legal and reporting requirements when encountering suspected human trafficking cases.
10. Learners will be able to identify and access appropriate resources for victims and survivors of human trafficking.
11. Learners will be able to recognize the importance of cultural and linguistic competency and implicit bias in identifying and supporting human trafficking survivors, understanding how these factors influence the care provided to diverse populations.
Course overview
Human trafficking is a widespread crime that affects vulnerable individuals across all demographics. Healthcare professionals are in a unique position to identify victims and provide life-saving interventions. This 2.0-hour CE course equips healthcare providers with the knowledge, skills, and legal obligations necessary to recognize, report, and respond to human trafficking in clinical or healthcare settings. Course Objectives and Topics This course meets state-mandated CE requirements and covers: 1. Understanding Human Trafficking a) Definitions and classifications: sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and organ trafficking b) Federal and state laws, including the Trafficking Victims Protection Act - TVPA c) The Action-Means-Purpose - A-M-P Model for identifying trafficking cases d) Global and U.S. trafficking trends, including the impact of COVID-19 2. Recognizing the Signs in Healthcare Settings a) Physical, psychological, and behavioral indicators of trafficking b) High-risk populations and vulnerabilities, such as homelessness and immigration status c) Implicit bias and cultural competency in victim identification 3. Intervention and Patient Care Strategies a) Screening and interviewing techniques for suspected victims b) Trauma-informed care principles for victim-centered support c) Barriers to disclosure and how to create a safe environment 4. Legal and Ethical Responsibilities a) Mandatory reporting laws for suspected human trafficking cases b) HIPAA compliance and confidentiality guidelines c) Collaboration with law enforcement, social services, and victim advocacy groups 5. Resources and Support Systems for Victims a) National and local agencies providing victim assistance, including the National Human Trafficking Hotline b) Referral networks for healthcare-based interventions c) Community outreach and advocacy strategies This course includes real-world case studies, survivor testimonials, and scenario-based learning to provide practical, actionable strategies for healthcare professionals. Accreditation and Continuing Education Credit Policy This CE course is approved for 2.0 contact hours and is intended for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dentists, therapists, social workers, and allied healthcare professionals. Reminder: Upon successful completion of this course, each licensee may only collect applicable Continuing Education credit once per license renewal period. CE credits should be applied only once per designated course, whether purchased and completed as an individual course or as part of a course bundle. By completing this training, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to identify trafficking, provide trauma-informed care, and fulfill their legal and ethical responsibilities in combating human trafficking.
