Course overview

Participants will be able to describe historical and cultural views of pain, and the impact of opiate use on the treatment of pain and addiction, will be able to describe biological, emotional, psychological, and cultural theories of pain, will be able to describe how opiate medications and illegal opiates interact with the neuron and the development of long-term consequences including addiction, physical dependence, and hyperalgesia, and will be able to describe non-opioid alternative therapies for pain management.
