Course Description: This course provides an in-depth exploration of Sjogrens Syndrome a chronic autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the exocrine glands leading to dry mouth dry eyes and a range of systemic symptoms. Designed for dental professionals this course aims to enhance understanding of the syndromes oral manifestations, diagnostic criteria, and the impact on dental treatment. Attendees will learn how to effectively manage Sjogrens Syndrome in a clinical setting, addressing challenges such as xerostomia (dry mouth) dental caries periodontal disease and the management of patient discomfort. This course also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration with medical professionals to ensure holistic care for patients with Sjogrens Syndrome. Course Objectives: 1-Understand the Pathophysiology. Define the etiology pathophysiology and clinical features of Sjogrens Syndrome focusing on how the disease affects the oral cavity. 2-Recognize Oral Manifestations. Identify the common oral symptoms of Sjogrens Syndrome, including dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, and changes in taste, and understand their impact on overall oral health. 3-Diagnose Sjogrens Syndrome. Discuss the diagnostic criteria and methods for diagnosing Sjogrens Syndrome, including the role of salivary gland biopsy blood tests and imaging techniques. 4-Manage Xerostomia. Implement practical strategies for managing xerostomia in patients with Sjogrens Syndrome, including the use of salivary substitutes, fluoride treatments, and other palliative care measures. 5-Prevent and Manage Dental Complications. Understand the heightened risk for dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral infections in patients with Sjogrens Syndrome and apply preventive techniques and treatments to mitigate these risks.
