Course overview

The United States is a country of immigrants, where every group with the exception of Native American Indians left their homelands in hopes of escaping religious or political persecution or merely to achieve greater prosperity. As a result, the residents of the United States comprise an exciting and dynamic mix of cultural and ethnic groups. Within cultural and ethnic groups, we see even more diversity ,different generations, levels of acculturation and adaptation, immigration status, socioeconomic status, and religious backgrounds further contribute to this rich mosaic. As healthcare professionals and service providers, we will inevitably work with patients and clients who are culturally and ethnically different from us. On the one hand, this is exciting. On the other hand, it presents a challenge as we work to provide culturally-sensitive and relevant treatment and services to culturally and ethnically diverse groups. The goal of this curriculum is to increase the healthcare professionals' awareness and knowledge of the tremendous cultural diversity in the United States. The first part of the curriculum will define terms and concepts related to cultural diversity and will examine the demographic trends of four major ethnic groups in the United States, as well as their cultural values and belief systems. The second part of the curriculum will examine the role of culture and associated factors such as prejudice, discrimination, oppression and poverty on health status. We will examine how race, culture and ethnicity influences beliefs about health and illness, including ways that individuals manifest and present their symptoms. How people communicate to medical professionals about health and illness and decisons about where and from whom to seek help are all culturally-laden. American Medical Association In the third section, we will focus on assessment guidelines for healthcare professionals so that they can begin modifying and tailoring their work to target the needs of patients and clients from culturally different and ethnic minority groups. Finally, the last part of the curriculum will provide resources so that healthcare professionals can continue to expand their knowledge base about cultural diversity, health and illness.
