Course overview
Part one of a series about obesity in the United States. Topics include the definition of obesity and its incidence in the United States; the consequences of obesity on the person with obesity and on the population; multiple causes of obesity and the causes of weight regain; recognizing obesity as a chronic disease; different modalities for treatment for persons with different weight loss needs; and lifestyle modifications for obesity. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare. There is a need for more education in the area of obesity and bariatric health, as there are multiple new medications and treatments with nursing considerations. Nurses need to be educated on these updates so they can provide safe care to the patients receiving these treatments.
