Child abuse and neglect, also known as child maltreatment, is a worldwide public health issue associated with a broad range of negative long-term health consequences in psychosocial development, and physical and mental health. Reports for suspected maltreatment are made for 3.5 million children each year in the United States. In 2020, 1,750 children in the United States died of abuse and neglect. This course discusses how nurses can recognize child abuse and neglect, while describing different types of abuse and potential short- and long-term consequences, legal requirements for mandated reporters, and prevention. There is also a discussion about how implicit bias may impact healthcare.
