Early Rehabilitation for Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury

Course overview

Recent advances in emergency medical care have fundamentally changed spinal cord injury outcomes. In particular we are seeing growing numbers of people with incomplete spinal cord injuries. These injuries present unique challenges but are associated with significant opportunities for functional recovery. To best serve this patient population rehabilitation professionals must understand the types and characteristics of incomplete spinal cord injuries as well as evidence-supported management techniques that can be adapted for each person. This knowledge can significantly enhance patient outcomes and quality of life. This course is designed for physiotherapists occupational therapists and other rehabilitation professionals working with spinal cord injury patients. It introduces the ASIA Impairment Scale and explores the classification of incomplete spinal cord injuries. It also describes different types of incomplete spinal cord injuries before exploring key early rehabilitation principles focusing on spasticity management techniques to address muscle imbalance gait training and community reintegration. These techniques and principles are effectively demonstrated through case study discussions and videos providing practical knowledge that can be immediately implemented in clinical practice. This course aims to provide an overview of evidence-supported early rehabilitation interventions for patients with incomplete spinal cord injury.
