Course overview

It is estimated that as many as 45% of pets in clinic databases qualify as seniors. The number of senior dogs in homes has increased from 42 to 52% in the past 10 years. Older pets may require anesthesia for multiple reasons (e.g., dental procedures are important to maintain overall health) and there are age-related physiological changes that must be considered to ensure a good outcome. Frailty assessment is an important factor in predicting the outcome of anesthesia and surgery in humans and it is becoming clear that this is true in dogs and cats. Age related physiological changes, frailty and comorbidities must all be considered when devising an anesthesia and analgesic plan for aging patients. Drug choices, drug doses and administration techniques must be adjusted for older pets. This webinar will help attendees feel more confident when performing anesthesia in older patients.
