Course overview
Environmental emergencies can involve a wide variety of causes and injuries. In other courses we have addressed the issues involved with chemical and biological emergencies, so in this course we will be addressing the types of injuries that can occur from naturally occurring emergencies. Exposure to temperature extremes, whether heat or cold, causes injury to the skin, tissues, blood vessels, vital organs, and in some cases, the entire body. Burns, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are caused by exposure to heat. Hypothermia (general cooling), frostbite, and (trenchfoot) immersion foot are caused by exposure to the cold.
