Restraint Reduction: Behavioral Alternatives to Physical and Chemical Restraint

Course overview

This class will focus on the important topic of physical and chemical restraints. We may think we're restraint free, but are we really? The challenge arises when a residents' behavior places that resident (or others) in a potentially dangerous situation. The risk for harm due to falls, elopement and resident to resident (or resident to staff) altercations may lead care providers to consider the use of restraints in order to protect those concerned. Indeed, when we're totally honest with ourselves, are we not still using medication to "support" residents when their behaviors are challenging to staff, or which may put the resident (or others) at risk? This important class will examine the regulations related to restraints as well as provide powerful approaches for the care of our more challenging residents without the use of physical or chemical restraints. THIS CLASS IS A MUST HAVE for Administrators, Nurses, Social Service Directors, Activity Directors and Staff Developers.
