Course overview

This session will provide an overview of brushing cytology in the diagnosis of pancreaticobiliary neoplasia, including a description of techniques for brushing and biopsy guidance and standard techniques for cytologic specimen preparation. You will learn about the advantages and limitations of the technique, including potential causes of false positive and false-negative diagnoses. You will see and hear discussions and demonstrations (illustrated with photomicrographs) of diagnostic categories and associated diagnostic criteria, with a focus on diagnostic accuracy. Coverage will also include the cytologic appearance of adenocarcinoma, dysplasia, metaplasias, and reactive atypia, as well as the morphologic findings in primary sclerosing cholangitis.
