Course overview

Working with very young, minimally verbal children requires speech-language pathologists and therapists alike to differentially diagnose between a delay and a disorder. When speech is late to develop, therapists must begin the process of making a differential diagnosis. Is it Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), dysarthria, autism, a phonological impairment or a speech delay? It is important to understand and identify the characteristics in order to effective treat and improve these communication barriers. This interactive and relevant one-day course will outline the differences between CAS and other speech sound disorders and will also provide a thorough discussion of speech development in children with autism. Other topics we will discuss include: when a formal diagnosis of CAS can be made, how to write motor-speech goals, and getting follow-through from parents and teachers. Participants will gain valuable strategies and activities for effectively treating young children with suspected CAS using a multisensory cueing approach.
