Behind the Curtain: The Neuroscience of Perception and Illusions
Tracking # 20-1297623
Course overview
Perception is not a direct reflection of reality. it is an active, constructive process shaped by both sensory input and cognitive influences. This course explores how the brain creates our experience of the world, using over 50 illusions and neuropsychological phenomena to reveal the fundamental principles of perception. While many illusions are visual, they offer key insights into how all sensory systems, including touch and proprioception, function. By examining bottom-up processing (driven by raw sensory input) and top-down processing (influenced by expectations, context, and prior experience), we gain a clearer understanding of how perception works across different sensory modalities. This has important implications for massage therapists, particularly in understanding chronic pain, body awareness, and the variability of sensory experience. Recognizing how perception is shaped at different levels of the nervous system, from the sense organs to the brain, helps us appreciate the complexity of what people experience in therapeutic settings. This course fosters a more nuanced and humble approach to interpreting what we feel through our hands and what our clients report experiencing. By seeing how the brain constructs reality, we can better appreciate the role of perception in pain, movement, and touch.
