Course overview

Cold weather emergencies can affect victims at any time during the year. A decrease in body temperature will have the same affect whether it is mid January or mid July. Providers should familiarize themselves with different cold dangers, the signs and symptoms of hypothermia and the consideration for hypothermia depending on the environment or situation they are in. Augie Bamonti, EMT-P, PHTLS Executive Council, from Chicago Heights, Illinois reviews the signs and symptoms and the emergency care for hypothermia. He also suggests ways for the EMS provider to protect themselves and their patients from the dangers of exposure.
