Course overview

With over 3 million people in the United States using some form of wheeled mobility (wheelchairs/scooters), the need for a comprehensive evaluation will continue to grow. Periods of prolonged sitting opens a person up to a wide range of secondary complications such as pressure ulcers, respiratory compromise, and pain. This increases the frequency of hospitalizations and health care costs. As clinicians and health care providers, it is imperative that wheeled mobility users be properly evaluated to decrease risk and increase optimal outcomes. This hands-on workshop will provide you with the confidence to complete a comprehensive wheelchair evaluation. Participants will learn to incorporate all relevant factors such as, client history, client function, evaluation results, and funding into the most appropriate equipment recommendations. Through the hands on lab, you will be able to select appropriate size/type of equipment and complete necessary adjustments to optimize function and safety. This will also cover funding and reimbursement documentation for equipment procurements. Participants will leave this workshop with an increased knowledge of how to decrease risk and improve posture, balance, functional mobility, and ADLs.
