Course overview

From birth, an infant begins interacting with the world and surrounding adults. Attachment styles, temperament, safety, and self-regulation begin with the very first interactions. This 2-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar examines typical developmental milestones for children aged birth to 3, establishes red flags indicating the need for further exploration, and tools for quick assessment of abilities. Early childhood professionals will learn about the stages of bonding/attachment, the language/behavior connection, and tips for supporting families of children with delays in social development or challenging behaviors. Activities and resources to support early caregiver/child interactions are provided. Upon completion, attendees can feel confident with their understanding of this developmental domain, its critical importance for school readiness, and implications for overall quality of life. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) state how early relationships and interactions impact emotional regulation; (2) list two strategies to foster attachment, self-regulation, and peer engagement; (3) identify two tools to support children with sensory or emotional regulation challenges; and (4) list two sensory-based strategies to improve meaningful social connections that will allow a child to become more successful with learning, social, and play activities. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, Foundational Knowledge, and targeted to introductory-level pediatric OTs, SLPs, parents, and other pediatric professionals in the early intervention population. The course instructor, Lori Benson Adams, MEd, is an educational intervention specialist and owner of Breakthrough Learning Solutions in Atlanta, Georgia.
