Course overview

The obesity rate in the United States has increased 30% in the past 10 years; more than 60 million Americans are considered obese. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Bariatrics is the term used to describe a branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity. As an EMS provider, you will encounter numerous challenges with morbidly obese patients. Not only can assessment be complex, but also moving and transporting these patients can be difficult if you dont have the right equipment or enough personnel. Morbidly obese patients often suffer from a multitude of health concerns, ranging from hypertension to diabetes. Having a good understanding of what to anticipate with these patients will help you provide the best care. Mobility is often a problem; if your department does not have bariatric equipment, mutual aid providers may be able to assist you. These patients are often suffering a serious medical emergency and need your help but have delayed their request for EMS for fear of humiliation or judgment. Be sensitive and professional. Treat these patients with respect and compassion.
