Course overview

5 Core Convictions for Trauma-Responsive Care Online Course This self-paced online course supports Counselors, Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and other human service professionals who care for, support, and provide services for clients with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, and complex trauma histories. 5 Core Convictions for Trauma-Responsive Care is a podcast-based course that introduces participants to foundational principles of trauma-informed practice through a lens of nervous system science, relational healing, and embodied awareness. Grounded in real-world experience and guided by the voice of trauma-responsive consultant and facilitator Sarah Buffie, the course invites learners to explore Five Core Convictions that reshape how we understand behavior, regulation, and connection. Participants will hear from practitioners and guest expert Anna Gagliuffi in deeply reflective episodes centered on healing, voice, survival strategies, co-regulation, and safe relationships. Each module includes a podcast episode, guided reflection prompt, and practical tools for applying key insights to caregiving and professional practice. The course includes 6 interactive self-paced modules designed for human service professionals. Each module includes lessons with podcast audio, articles, media links, and/or interactive reflective exercises. Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to: Describe how trauma is stored in the body and explain the implications for trauma-responsive practice. Identify and apply nervous system regulation strategies for both self and client support. Distinguish between real and perceived threats in the body and describe how these affect behavior and relational dynamics. Reframe trauma symptoms as survival strategies and apply that lens to client presentations. Analyze how healing occurs in safe, supportive relationships and reflect on the role of co-regulation in caregiving work. Demonstrate increased awareness of the five Core Convictions of trauma-responsive care and integrate them into reflective professional practice.
